FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FROM THE NEW LONDON-WATERFORD SPEEDBOWL
WATERFORD – The storyline of the season for Open Street Stock competition was just how dominant Ryan Lineham was. During qualifying for the 5th annual Northeast Street Stock Championship, Austin Erickson put up a fight but the game remained the same. Come feature time, Erickson and the Speedbowl’s weekly division win leader Al Stone III ran for cover, with Erickson having the advantage. Stone hung in there and was able to clear for the lead, all while Lineham and teammate Derek Gluchacki were maneuvering their way through traffic. Lineham followed stone briefly before moving up to the outside groove and gliding his way into the lead on lap 7 of 50.
Erickson, now in third, had a mirror full of Gluchacki and Andrew Gillis. Both drivers get by but Erickson was the loser in that battle, resulting in a DNF and bringing out the first caution on lap 15. Lineham aced the restart and Gluchacki tried to follow, but Stone put up a fight with Gillis laying in wait. He hung in there long enough to clear Gluchacki until a halfway caution racked the field up again. This time around, Gluchacki cleared Stone until the driveshaft fell out of Gillis’ machine drawing another caution. Thirteen to go, one final caution flies putting Gluchacki up against Lineham. The two had a brief battle where Gluchacki gave up on the outside to cross over for the lead, but couldn’t hang in there. Lineham pocketed the $1,500 pay day over Gluchacki with Stone rounding out the podium.
A mix of weekly Mini Stocks, northern Mini Stocks, and X-Cars took to the ‘Bowl for this years open race. Eric Pomasko took the early race lead while 2023 Speedbowl Champion Chris Garside was battling the 2021 Champion Tommy Silva for second. Silva cleared Garside and worked by Pomasko early in the race to take control until lap 7 when the 2024 Champion Charles Canfield went up in smoke. Silva aced the restart and Cameron Sontag used this opportunity to pull by Garside, and the two ran off. As laps clicked off, Nick Anderson worked his way into the top 3 and put his hat into the ring. Sontag kept nipping at Silvas tail but kept getting denied. This allowed Anderson to try and get by Sontag, with no success. Sontag was finally able to clear Silva on lap 21 of 40, leaving him in his dust while Anderson tried fighting for second. Time expired for Anderson and he couldn’t complete the pass, but was still able to land on the podium. Sontag, who had raced at the facility before in a tour-type modified, won in his first Mini Stock start.
Alby Ovitt made the trek down south to not only win but the 100 lap Compact Enduro season finale from his 50th place starting spot of 51 entries. Super X-Car division win leader and former full time competitor John Yagmin picked up the Full Size win after a thrilling battle coming down to the wire with Bill Davis. Devon Murby took home the win in the growing Truck/SUV Enduro, and Mini Stock regular Erica Canfield took home her first Speedbowl win in the Ladies Enduro.
