Dick Dunn was one of the most accomplished Speedbowl competitors during the 1960’s, then became a Speedbowl legend in the 1970’s driving Al & Peg Gaudreau’s #3 Modified.

The Middletown, CT native won his first race at Waterford on May 3, 1959 in the Bomber division. He would win again in August, then 5 times the following season. He then moved onto the Modified division.
Dunn first drove his own #48, then later piloted Bill Trask’s #353 during the 1960’s, then drove Bill Simons’ #9 in 1970. He visited victory lane in each car and scored at least 1 win every season from 1964-1970. His biggest win to that point came in the New England Champion 75 lapper in 1964.

Then in 1971, Dunn and Trask’s crew member Al Gaudreau formed one of the most dominant teams in Speedbowl history. They won once in 1971, then in 1972 started an unprecedented streak of 4 straight Modified Championships from 1972-1975, with car owner Peg Gaudreau winning a 5th owner title in 1976. From 1971-1978, Dunn drove the Gaudreau #3 to 29 feature wins, including a record (7) 100 lap races. Nobody won more Modified races in the 1970’s at the Speedbowl than Dick Dunn.
Dunn ran a handful of races for Gaudreau in subsequently years, but largely retired from competition after the 1978 season. He passed away on March 27, 2015 at the age of 77.
