After running a few Enduros, Brouwer debuted in the Late Model division in 1988 and captured Rookie of the Year honors. He won his first race in 1991 after an intense battle with defending champ Jay Stuart. He would win 6 races in the Late Models during the 1990’s.

In 1996, 6-time Champion Phil Rondeau was in good shape to win a 7th championship until he broke during the last race, on lap 39 to be exact, which happened to be Brouwer’s car number. John stayed out of trouble and finished 2nd to clinch the championship by 4 points over Rondeau. That same year he also won SK Modified Rookie of the Year. Brouwer would go on to win 4 SK Modified races in the early 2000’s.

Brouwer, in addition to his strong connection to fans with his colorful cars and zany antics, Brouwer had an interesting area in the south pits dubbed “Brouwerland” that offered plenty of entertainment for his fellow competitors, including a pool, basketball court, video games and a miniature golf course available during the abundance of down time during a typical race day.

After almost a decade away from weekly competition, Brouwer returned in 2013 and won a couple of Super X-Car races. They were the last two wins of his Speedbowl career.
