“Mr. Lightning” Newt Palm was one of the stars of the Speedbowl in the late 1950’s throughout the 1960’s winning multiple championship for multiple car owners during his career.

Newt first gained notice in the Bomber division, winning back-to-back championships driving the Maffei & Kensel #53 in 1959-1960. He won 10 races in 1959, then 12 races the following season to briefly become the divisions all time winner. His 22 career Bomber wins are 2nd only to Ed Moody.

Then in the late 1960’s, he replaced Billy Harman in the famed L&M built & owned by Stanley Lascowski & Stosh Miezejeski. They won back-to-back Modified Championships at Waterford in 1967-1968, becoming the first driver to repeat as Modified Champion in Speedbowl history. Newt’s biggest win was the 100 lap Fall Championship race in 1966. He won 24 Modified races between 1965-1969, more than any other Modified driver during that span.

Newt suffered major injuries in a vicious wreck driving the L&M at Seekonk Speedway in 1969 and promptly retired from racing. He has continued to visit the Speedbowl as a spectator every now & then since his retirement.
