Ray Delisle was little in stature but one of the biggest stars at the Speedbowl during the 1950’s & 1960’s.

His first win at the track came on Aug 4, 1951 in the Modifieds during the Speedbowl’s first season. He would win 13 Modified races at the shoreline oval during the 1950’s driving for numerous car owners. He would also compete in the Non-Ford division, scoring a feature win on August 22, 1959.

Delisle is probably most remembered for his time in Billy Simons’ #9 “Excavator Special”. He took over the ride from Hank Stevens for the 1964 season and promptly won both the Sportsman and Modified Championships by season’s end. His dominance as an under-powered Sportsman car amongst the Modifieds is largely considered the reason the Sportsman class within the Modified division was dissolved after the 1964 season.
Ray would win 3 more Modified races in 1965 and then competed for close to another decade at the Speedbowl before retiring from competition. Ray Delisle passed away on September 14, 2004 at the age of 77.
