Richard “Bubby” Brouwer was a mainstay at the Waterford Speedbowl both on & off the track from the mid-1980’s through the mid-2010’s. He first began racing in the Late Model division, scoring his first victory on September 10, 1988. He would compete occasionally in the division into the early 2000’s.

He then became the first star of the X-Modified division on Wild N’ Wacky Wednesday. After scoring 2 wins in 2006, he came back the following year to win a division-record 11 times in 16 races driving the Herman #49 car. Bubby also won a record 4 straight X-Modified races and the track championship by season’s end.

Bubby won 4 more times in 2008 and then 3 more wins in 2009. Then in 2010, he dominated the division again winning 10 times in the #16 car and earning his second Speedbowl Championship. His 30 career wins in what is currently the SK Light division is the most in Speedbowl history.

Off the track, most notably during Terry Eames‘ era operating the track, Bubby Brouwer took care of the Speedbowl facility. In this property maintenance role, Bubby did everything from move Jersey barriers in the infield for thrill shows & demo derbies, to drain the infield that flooded frequently during that time. Bubby was a heavy equipment operator as well, always involved in capital improvements over the years. Terry Eames’ cited him as the unsung hero during his time operating the track. He stayed in his role behind the scenes when Bruce Bemer bought the track at the end of the 2014 season.

Sadly, Bubby Brouwer passed away on Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at the age of 53. The 2-time champion will always be remembered for his contributions both on & off the track.
