Ed Gertsch Jr has driven several types of race cars during his career, including Mini Stocks and Late Models, but it has been in the Street Stock division that he made his mark in Speedbowl history. An East Haven native, Gertsch became a mainstay in the division from 1996-2004 with old-school racing legends like Dickie Mills & Billy Greco in his corner. He led the division in wins in both 1998 (5) when they were called Strictly Stocks and 2004 (6) when they were called Sportsman.
In 2003, he won the Sportsman championship. He also finished runner-up to the title in 1997, 1998 and 2004. The 2004 championship battle went down to the last laps of the last race with Ed as one of 4 drivers in the title hunt, which also included his step-brother Dwayne Conant, Norm Root Jr and eventual champion Keith Rocco.

Gertsch became the division’s all-time winner in 2002 and his 26 career wins through 2004 was the division record until Al Stone III eclipsed it during the 2011 season. After years away, Ed returned to the track in the mid-2010’s to win in successive seasons from 2014-2016. After another hiatus, he returned again in the early 2020’s and won twice more in 2024. His 31 career wins in the division are now 2nd best on the Street Stock Career Wins list.
Gertsch remains the elder statesman of the 8-cylinder stock division, winning races in 12 different seasons across 4 different decades during his long career. He has also won during every incarnation of the division (Strictly Stock, Sportsman, Limited Sportsman and Street Stock) over the years.
