George Hewitt Jr was a successful local boxer and later a competitive motorcyclist in local arenas before he started racing at the Speedbowl in the Bomber division during the 1960’s. He was 33 years old when he won his first race in 1966. He actually won the next Bomber race on the schedule as well. He moved onto the Modifieds shortly thereafter, capturing a couple more wins in the late 1960’s before traveling the NASCAR circuit and competing at Stafford Speedway during the early 1970’s.
“Moose” returned to the Speedbowl in the late 1970’s with a Pinto-body Modified owned by George Brennan and the duo went on to win 15 races and record-tying 5 Modified championships between 1977-1984. His best Speedbowl season was arguably 1978, when he won a career best 5 races during the season. He had a streak of 4 straight wins in June, the last of which was a 75-lapper. During this era, Bob Potter won Speedbowl championships in 1976, 1980 and 1983 and his rivalry with Moose is one of the more well-remembered rivalries in Speedbowl history.

As the Speedbowl transitioned to SK Modifieds in 1985, Hewitt continued to visit Speedbowl Victory lane with more wins in late 1980’s and early 1990’s. He also competed in the Late Model division in that era, but a win always eluded him in the fendered division. His last win at the track in September of the 1994 season at the age of 61.
His brother Ben “Turk” Hewitt, daughter Kim Gero and grandson Kyle Gero have all won races at the Speedbowl as well. Hewitt passed away unexpectedly on February 24, 1997. Moose was posthumously inducted into the NEAR Hall of Fame in 2016.
