Corey Hutchings began racing late in the 1996 in the Strictly Stock division. He tried to qualify for the last couple of races that year, but didn’t qualify. In that era, the division regularly had over 30 cars attempt to qualify each week. But when he returned the next season his fortunes would change, and his exciting way of marching to the front earned him the nickname “The Entertainer”.

He won his first race in 1997, then 4 more in 1998 which helped him earned the Strictly Stock Championship. He was even more dominant in 1999, winning a then-record 10 races. But a penalty during the season stripped him of any chance of repeating a champion.

Corey moved onto the Late Models in 2000 and had immediate success winning 3 races and Rookie to the Year honors. Corey would win 25 Late Model races from 2000-2006, including three 100 lappers. He never finished worse than 3rd in points from 2000-2004, including back-to-back Late Model Championships in 2003-2004.

He was leading the Funkmaster Flex Late Model Invitational in 2004 before having to leave for commitments to his Thompson Speedway team, which had an event the same day. That year he was also named the NASCAR ShorTrack Series New England Region Champion

As the Speedbowl Late Model’s became dominated by ACT-type cars, Corey left the track to compete elsewhere, but returned in 2009 driving an SK Modified for Cliff Nelson and scoring 2 wins – his 3rd different Speedbowl division with a win.

Corey returned to weekly Speedbowl competition in 2012, winning 4 times in the Street Stock division, the 7 more times in 2013 when he won his 2nd championship in the division and his 4th overall at the track. He also had a memorable rivalry with Josh Galvin during this era.

He also won a race in the Truck division during the 2013 season. Always a versatile driver, Hutchings also won 4 Outlaw Stock races at the Speedbowl, usually held during Finale weekend.

All told, Corey has 59 Speedbowl wins across 5 different divisions. While he’s now largely removed from Speedbowl competition, every once and a while it would not be surprising to see him compete in fendered stock division back at his home track.
