Ted Stack was one of the best drivers at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl during the track’s first 2 decades of operation. He drove for numerous car owners over the years, most notably Sharkey Guadiosi’s #4.
Stack won his first race in the Non-Ford division on Aug 18, 1954, then won 37 more times in the division from 1956-1961. His first championship came in 1956 after a 6-win season. He started winning races in the Modified division as well in 1958, and would compete regularly in both divisions over the next 4 seasons.

His 1960 season was dominating, winning 14 features and his 2nd Non-Ford Championship. In 1961, he started the season out winning 7 consecutive races. He won the Modified race on opening night, then both the Non-Ford race and the Modified in each of the next 3 weeks. He actually won the first 5 Modified races that year, including a 50 lapper and 14 for the year. Stack won 5 of the 8 Non-Ford races that season until the track dissolved the division. His 19 wins total were 2nd only to Don Collins’ 23 for the most overall wins in any Speedbowl season at the time. Ted also became the first driver to win championships in 2 different divisions in consecutive seasons.
Stack would end his Speedbowl career in the mid-1960’s with 38 Non-Ford wins and 32 Modified wins. He died of cancer at the age of 72 on June 5, 2000. He was inducted posthumously to the NEAR Hall of Fame in 2021.
